The vagus nerve is the longest and most complex of the 12 cranial nerves that provides a two-way communication between the brain and major systems/organs in your body and plays a very important role in your autonomic nervous system. More precisely, it is the main component of the parasympathetic nervous system (aka your rest & digest response).
Having a 'low vagal tone' (a well-known cause of stress) means that the vagus nerve isn't functioning properly. This can then lead to anxiety, depression, inflammation, voice problems, and many other health issues.
Stimulating the vagus nerve can increase vagal tone, helping you to bring your mind, body and nervous system in a state of calm and relaxation. This means that your body can relax faster after stress and allows your body to grow, repair, and restore itself. Plus, it helps you to develop a healthy stress response and build your resilience.
